Prof Judith Tanner
Joint Lead

Judith Tanner is the Professor of Adult Nursing in the School of Health Sciences, University of Nottingham. Her area of specialist expertise is surgical site infection (SSI). This includes effectiveness of interventions to prevent SSI, SSI surveillance, image-based surgical wound monitoring, SSI care bundles, patient experiences of SSI and implementation. Her work informs many national and professional SSI guidelines. Judith is the joint lead for the TREASURE study.

Keith Wilson
Patient and Public Involvement Lead
Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital Trust
Keith is a full-time patient representative at Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital. He is dedicated to promoting and strengthening the public and patient voice in research, helping to ensure that studies are inclusive, appropriate and relevant. His work aims to support higher-quality research and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.

Kumbi Kariwo
Learning Disabilities Nurse and Health Inequalities Lead
Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
Kumbi is a dedicated Learning Disabilities Nurse and Health inequalities Lead at Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. Passionate about inclusive care, she has led impactful Quality Improvement projects and founded the Young Peoples Sexual Health Service, recognised by the NHS Parliamentary Awards and CQC. In 2021, she became the Trust’s first Chief of Nursing Fellow, advancing work in Digital Health and inequalities. Kumbi developed training on wound care in diverse skin tones, promoting equity in practice. Her leadership has earned her titles of Queen’s Nurse and Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, reflecting her commitment to compassionate, patient-centred care.

Mohamed Idhrish Jafer Sadiq
Clinical Research Practitioner
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Idhrish is a Clinical Research Practitioner currently working on the TREASURE study, where he acts as the primary point of contact for patients and supports the delivery of high-quality clinical research. He holds an MSc in Clinical Pharmacology from King’s College London and has a pharmacy background, along with experience in oncology with a strong commitment to patient-centred care. With a solid foundation in clinical trial delivery and adherence to regulatory standards, Idhrish is dedicated to advancing evidence-based improvements in patient outcomes.

Melissa Rochon
Joint Lead
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Melissa is the Trust Lead for SSI Surveillance, Research and Innovation at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She is on a number of national and international committees for surgical wound healing, surgical site infection (SSI) prevention, and the use of digital wound images in wound care. Melissa has promoted the use of digital images in surgical wound care to improve information and outcomes for patients, and between care settings.

Chris Newby

Dr Chris Newby is a senior statistician and Quantitative advisor at the NIHR Research Support Service. Now based in University of Nottingham Chris previously worked for the Pragmatic Clinical Trials unit at Queen Mary, University of London as a lecturer and the Biomedical Research Centre at University of Leicester. He has supported several feasibility studies, included those for digital interventions. He research interests are digital interventions, respiratory medicine, mental health research and equality, diversity and inclusion in research.
Ishtiaq Ahmed
Consultant Cardiac Surgeon
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust
British, Australian and European trained surgeon who performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, with a specialist interest in Mitral Valve repair and Minimal access techniques. He currently works as a consultant cardiac surgeon at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. He has a repair rate of over 95% for degenerative mitral valve lesions which include complex bi leaflet prolapse, Barlows valves and infective endocarditis. He has an interest in medical technologies and has set up the minimal access mitral program and uses a minimal access approach for valve procedures. He lead and introduced patient centred digital monitoring of wounds at University Hospitals Sussex. Additionally he has a strong interest in training and has set up the first hybrid / VR based cadaver lab in Europe. He is an expert advisor for medical technologies to NICE, part of the BISMICS steering group and ambassador to the charity Heart Valve Voice.

Nada Mostafa
Senior Innovation Lead

Nada is a Senior Commercial Project Lead within Health Innovation East Midlands. Working as part of the Commercial Partnerships Function, driving the take-up of innovations into the healthcare system and leading on innovation projects designed to deliver improvements in clinical outcomes and stimulate economic growth. PRINCE2 and MSP Practitioner with MSc in Project Management and extensive experience in Transformation and Programme Management. With demonstrable track record of successful NHS programme delivery, Nada support projects to innovators from Academia, Healthcare system and private sector. Recognised as a proactive, conscientious, efficient individual who always perform under pressure, to tight timelines. Specialises in leading teams and stakeholders and develops strong partnerships to enhance collaboration and spread innovation across organisations.

Karen Cariaga
Project Manager
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Karen is a nurse by background and a specialist in surgical site infection prevention at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. As the TREASURE Project Manager, she brings experience managing NIHR-funded studies and multiple healthcare research projects to support the work packages throughout the study.

Luciana Sowole
HCID training lead
Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust
Dr Luciana Sowole completed her undergraduate medical training at University College London and began specialist training in Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiology in 2015 (pan London). Luciana was appointed as a Consultant at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospital (part of GSTT) in January 2023 and leads on the management of infections in cardiothoracic surgery at Harefield hospital. Luciana also has a special interest in high consequence infectious diseases (HCID) and is the HCID training lead at GSTT. She obtained a master’s degree in clinical education from Kings College London in 2024.

Dr Roy Harris

Dr Roy Harris is a MedTech product development specialist with over 40 years' experience in innovative medical technology research and IP management and commercialisation. He has headed up research groups in the industry, set up his own MedTech company developing advanced wound dressings and spent eight years as Head of IP and Commercialisation for NUH NHS Trust in Nottingham. Before moving to current position as adviser for translational research, he spent three years as Research Business Manager for the research support team in the School of Medicine at University of Nottingham.
Dr. Janet Bouttell
Health Economist
Centre for Healthcare Equipment and Technology Adoption (CHEATA), Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
Dr. Janet Bouttell, a health economist and chartered accountant, transitioned to academia in 2015. She holds an MSc in Health Technology Assessment and a PhD in HTA from the University of Glasgow, followed by an Innovate UK Knowledge Transfer Partnership postdoc in molecular diagnostic technologies. Her focus is on refining health technology assessment methods to support the development of cost-effective medical devices with significant clinical impact. Currently, she works at the Centre for Healthcare Equipment and Technology Adoption in Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Janet excels in developing value propositions, business models, and health economic modelling.
